It happened at the southwest corner of North Lamar & 10th Street (across the street from the 7-11 store on the east side of Lamar) in the Spring of 2003, during the SXSW Music Festival week in Austin, Texas if I remember correctly. I had made it a point of going to the Cheapo's Record Store to hear LiveSets by both Shandon Sahm (#2 son of Sir Doug) & this man, the truly legendary Tony Joe White! I had been a fan of Tony Joe since 1969 when "Polk Salad Annie" had been blasting all over the AM radio during that summer. There was an empty lot on the very corner of Lamar & 10th where I had parked my old 1968 Ford Galaxy... and I saw Tony Joe get out of his car with an electric guitar in one hand & a cup of hot coffee in the other, by chance we had both arrived at the SAME time! As he was rushing over the empty lot towards Cheapo's, I grabbed this LP cover and by the time he knew it, he was signing it while I held his coffee cup!! Inside, he played one lively mean set with only a drummer behind him and he with his electric guitar and a harmonica rack! Played "Polk Salad Annie" right there 5 feet in front of me!!! BEAUTIFUL. Shandon Sahm's Iggy Pop-ish set was icing on the cake! He had a killer 5-piece band including ex-PARIAH members! Shandon gave me a sealed copy of his latest CD and we talked about his Pop, but that's a story for another day... 1971 original UK press Warner Bros. Records LP #WS 1900, autographed Gatefold cover NM, NO seam or spine splits, NO cut-out markings, NO ring-wear, vinyl NM, NO scratches, plays excellent.

1965 original Archive of Folk Music LP pressing #FM-105, cover VG+, NO seam or spine splits, NO cut-out markings, NO ring-wear, vinyl VG+, NO scratches, plays excellent. This cat was born in 1918! Maybe he met my daddy who was born in 1904 near Linares, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. And my daddy hung around many migrant labor camps in the 1940s & 50s before I was born, he worked hard all his life, until he went to sleep at the age of 93. Anyway, Cisco Houston here reminds me of the early Bob Dylan (who was not shy about "borrowing" licks and styles from other great artists, EVERYBODY does it, it's how you learn things), small wonder since both were associated with the sparkplug Woody Guthrie. Simple songs sung in a way that can do nothing but energize & invigorate you!
